Ballarat Fire Station
Cnr Barkly & East Streets, Ballarat
Learn about the fascinating history of the Ballarat Fire Station, which was erected after a disastrous fire in Main Road in 1855. A group of locals believed the suburb needed its own fire station and the brigade purchased a building on Specimen Hill for 60 pounds which became the first engine house.
A better site on the corner of Barkly and East streets was later purchased, and a new station constructed in time for Christmas in December 1858. One hundred and fifty years later this magnificent building still stands on the site and is open to the public.
